Alcatel-Lucent helps deliver speed and reliability across the connected home

With the rise of the Internet of Things, the sheer amount of devices being connected around the home is putting significant demand on our local network. Not only this, but we expect each to work seamlessly without a drop in connection or speed to ensure we are able to have remote access wherever we are.

Federico Guillén, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s Fixed Access Business Line, said: “With the Internet of Things enabling an unprecedented number of objects to interact and share data, connected device shipments are expected to grow at a faster rate than smartphones and tablets over the next few years, placing huge demands on home Wi-Fi networks."

Alcatel-Lucent has announced two new products that should allow consumers to experience their communication provider's true speeds throughout the home and, in-turn, faster more reliable Wi-Fi connectivity across all their devices.

Many consumers now subscribed to Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services which should be able to deliver broadband speeds in the hundreds of megabits, or close to a gigabit, per second speeds. A similar amount of customers won't be able to benefit from this potential due to poor Wi-Fi speeds and reliability.

Guillén explains: “By offering the first gigabit Wi-Fi solution we are helping operators deliver on the promise of their fiber networks to meet their customers’ ever-growing demands for connectivity and speed. ONT Easy Start will open up new options for operators, allowing them to free up resources as they reduce costs.”

The telecom equipment manufacturer's new 7368 Intelligent Service Access Manager (ISAM) optical network terminal (ONT) is a home network hub which aims to solve this problem through dual-band Wi-Fi and greater signal strength to help ensure consistent distribution of broadband speed throughout the house at up to 1 Gbps of bandwidth.

Operators will be able to offer their customers a one-box wireless gateway, the Gigabit Wi-Fi 7368 ISAM ONT G-240W-B, which can help to deliver the speeds promised by the operator around the home. The box has "up to" 500 milliwatt of transmit power dependent on the region, whilst USB 2/3.0 technology will allow customers to access their media around the house.

Service providers will also benefit from 'ONT Easy Start' which brings together Alcatel-Lucent’s FTTH technology, Motive CEM solutions, and professional services to give operators an integrated view and advanced workflows that are designed to simplify the ONT set-up and registration process.
